Natural Alternative for Cough Syrup

Pears are used in Chinese Medicine food therapy to nourish the lungs, especially in the Autumn season. They are particularly great when you have a cough because they’re good at clearing heat and phelgm, while moistening the Lungs.

Children’s over the counter cough syrups don’t have many active ingredients that help. And for infants who can’t even have honey, they basically have none. So pears are a great option!

Here is a recipe for medicinal (and tasty!) pears for when your baby has a cough.

Ingredients

3 small pears, any variety (peeled, cored, and cut into 4 slices

1 cinnamon stick

2 slices of fresh ginger

Bring pears, cinnamon and ginger, to a boil in enough water to cover the pears. Reduce heat and simmer on medium low, covered, for about 20 minutes.

From here you can either remove the pears and let them cool before giving them to your baby whole (Baby Lean Weaning style). Or, you can blend them in a blender with some of the water from cooking to desired texture.
